Your responsibilities

  • The Section of Foreign Publications seeks an exceptional individual who will be part of the team ensuring that that level of foreign-language works published by the IPN Publishing House is of the highest standard.
  • The ideal candidate would not only have an excellent command of English but would also possess a knowledge of Polish allowing for checking the accuracy of translated / proofread texts with their Polish-language originals, as well as the accuracy of an English text written originally in English by a non-native. The candidate would also be able to successfully manage the entire publication process of a book – up to its printing.
  • You copy-edit / proofread English academic publications, including conforming footnotes and bibliography to the editorial standard for foreign publications adopted by the IPN Publishing House. You collaborate with authors, clarify doubts, do fact-checking as required, making sure the English text is in line with the author’s intent and is fully understandable to English readers.
  • You review and accept English texts translated by freelance translators or external translation houses, making sure these texts adhere to the editorial standard for foreign publications adopted by the IPN Publishing House. You work with freelance translators, copy editors, and proofreaders as required. You extend the portfolio of freelance talent if this is what your publishing project requires.
  • You monitor the editorial processes related to English publications under your supervision, updating about progress, escalating if needed. This task may include preparing formal progress reports.
  • You coordinate editorial tasks pertaining to English publications under your supervision – up until the start of printing process. You project-manage these publications, liaise with other departments / persons, including but not limited to administration, typesetting, and graphic design.
  • You propose improvements in editorial process, pro-actively addressing challenges, suggesting alternatives if needed.

Our requirements

  • Professional fluency in English and proficiency in Polish.
  • Professional experience copy-editing / proofreading English-language academic publications – including texts delivered by non-native English authors – especially in the fields of history, political science, and law. Ability to work with archival materials would be helpful.
  • Familiarity with the various editorial standards applied in the humanities, including practical knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style editions 16 & 17. In daily copy-editing work adherence to our in-house IPN Editorial Style Guide is required.
  • Understanding the entire book publishing workflow, including production planning and copyright management, as well as typesetting and blueline check.
  • Ability to work with sensitive and disturbing content, including texts and photographs dealing with various forms of violence and hate including war, war crimes, crimes against humanity, hateful announcements and documents, the activities of dictatorships and their organs, as well as concerning sensitive communities and personal data.
  • A practical ability to work with a wide variety of persons including academics (authors), academic editors, translators, copy editors, proofreaders, graphic designers, and typesetters, as well as with administrative personnel who make sure that copyrights are secured and purchase orders are raised and accepted.
  • Interest in the history of Poland, Central and Eastern Europe, and the former Eastern Bloc, particularly in the period 1917–1990.
  • Comfortable working independently but also as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with texts submitted in various formats, including Word and PDF, and able to correctly enter the necessary adjustments.
  • An eagle eye for detail, well-organized, and adaptable.
  • A practical knowledge of MS Office and Adobe Reader DC.
